Internazionale vs Lecce
September 26, 2008 at 6:44 am (LuvLyInternazionale)
MILAN – Milestones were in fashion at the Meazza as José Mourinho completed his century of league matches at home without defeat, Javier Zanetti wore black and blue for the 600th time, and Julio Cesar made his 100th appearance in Italy’s Serie A.
But more importantly, Inter warmed up for Sunday’s Milan derby with a 1-0 victory over gritty Lecce, courtesy of a goal from substitute Julio Cruz eleven minutes from time.
The win puts the Nerazzurri in solitary command at the top of the table after four rounds of matches as Juve were held at home to Catania.
Mourinho made two changes to the side that beat Torino at the weekend, handing starts to Stankovic and Cordoba and leaving Materazzi and Maicon on the bench.
A sluggish game came alive in the 26th minute when Ibrahimovic sent his 35-metre free kick soaring over the Giallorossi wall and on to the bar.
Lecce responded just past the half hour when their captain Zanchetta forced a good save from Julio Cesar.
Mourinho made two changes at the break, introducing Maicon and Quaresma for Vieira and Stankovic, later bringing on Julio Cruz for Chivu.
Playing with three centre-forwards and two wingers, the Nerazzurri poured forward and got their reward when El Jardinero met Ibra’s pull-back and slotted past Benussi from the edge of the box.
Ibrahimovic could have made the result extra safe minutes later, his intuitive long-range effort only just kept out by the Lecce keeper.

TURIN – Inter sit on top of the table after 270 minutes of Serie A football after a 3-1 victory over Torino at the Stadio Olimpico.
Brazilians Mancini and Maicon stunned the Granata with goals in the space of two first-half minutes, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic wrapped up the points just after the restart.
Torino reduced the deficit through Elvis Abbruscato with 14 minutes remaining and kept Julio Cesar busy in the final stages.
Cristian Chivu made his return to the starting lineup as Mourinho fielded a 4-3-3 with an attacking trio of Ibrahimovic, Mancini and Adriano – back in the starting XI for the first time since last October’s match against Reggina.
Toro made a bright start and all their front men had chances in the early stages, with Amoruso and Rosina firing wide before Bianchi rose to head behind.
Inter broke the deadlock on 24 minutes when Adriano played in the unmarked Mancini, whose cross-shot went in off Pisano.
Maicon doubled the lead inside two minutes, finding the top-left corner with a sweetly struck right-foot shot after collecting Vieira’s pass.
Ibrahimovic made it 3-0 six minutes after the break, slotting past Sereni from ten yards after taking Mancini’s pass into the area.
The Nerazzurri continued to pressurise Torino with some flowing counter-attacks but De Biasi’s men were given a lifeline when Abbruscato slid home from close range after meeting Saumel’s left-wing cross.
Rallied by their goal, the Granata came looking for more and Bianchi forced Julio Cesar into a reflex block with a flicked header before Abbruscato headed against the bar.

ATHENS – Inter made the perfect start to their 2008/09 Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Panathinaikos.
Mancini opened the scoring in the 27th minute of Tuesday’s Group B opener, slotting beyond Galinovic after Ibrahimovic juggled the ball past two opponents.
Second-half sub Adriano made sure of the points after replacing Mancini, crashing home his shot from Ibrahimovic’s delightful through ball with five minutes remaining.
José Mourinho named a 4-3-3 lineup at the Olympic Stadium, starting with Quaresma, Ibrahimovic and Mancini in attack with a midfield line of Vieira, Cambiasso and Zanetti.
The Nerazzurri stepped up a gear after an early period of Panathinaikos pressure and Ibrahimovic slid wide from Vieira’s inviting pass into the area.
Galinovic was forced into saves from Quaresma and Ibrahimovic as Inter imposed their domination before Mancini broke the deadlock.
Ten Cate’s men could have equalised within minutes but the ever dependable Julio Cesar produced a tipped save from Bryce Moon’s long-range effort.
The South African went close again minutes before the break, his shot from the edge of the box taking a deflection off Materazzi before coming back off the crossbar.
Ivanchitz, Cleyton and Salpingidis carved out chances as Greeks made an aggressive start to the second period, prompting Mourinho to shuffle his pack and introduce Figo and Muntari for Quaresma and Vieira.
Panathinaikos continued to press and Julio Cesar was kept busy, with Inter limited to counter-attacks.
Mourinho made his third change in the 82nd minute, and it proved to be the turning point.
